Women Tech Council Introduces Sponsors

The Women Tech Council announced its 2014 Industry Sponsors. Industry Sponsors support the Women Tech Council and enable the nonprofit organization to provide networking, mentoring, and educational events to members and non-members throughout the year.

“Our goal is to provide resources to women and young women who work in the technology industry,” said Kim Jones, Women Tech Council Board Chair. “The support of these wonderful sponsors makes it possible to bring our 5,000 members together and expand our capabilities as an organization.”

Local entrepreneur says to retrain from within

PROVO — One of the most serious shortages in high-tech or innovative companies that employers face is finding technologists and programmers.

By 2020, there will be 1.4 million computing jobs and only 400,000 computer science students graduating.

“We need a new talent pool,” Sara Dansie Jones said and then gave solutions.

 Utah Valley Entrepreneurial Forum invited Jones to share her insight on the shortage and how to build an A-Team of technologists for the monthly luncheon on Oct. 9 at Zions Bank in Provo.

OpenWest event doubles its numbers

OREM — Director Victor Villa had an aha moment just a few days before the Utah Open Source Foundation’s 10th annual conference at Utah Valley University.

“I have got to be honest with you, it was a Field of Dreams moment for me,” Villa said.

In 2012 there were 481 who participated in the conference and Villa had made a goal for 700 this year.

How well did he and others who helped with that goal do?

A few days before the OpenWest Conference, online registration spiked. Organizers capped registration at 760, and a conservative estimate of those in attendance including speakers and volunteers is 840.
